MASHASHANE- A 51-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape. This follows the incident where an eight (08) year-old girl from this area outside Polokwane was raped by a well-known person to her who is also her neighbour and a relative.
The accused raped this helpless girl on 30 July 2013 after he went to her room while the grandmother was sleeping. He threatened the victim and subsequently raped her before he left the scene.
The victim reported the ordeal to her grandmother who immediately notified the police.
The Police reacted swiftly and started with their investigations until the accused was nabbed in a wink of an eye.
Meanwhile, in the Motetema Policing area outside Groblersdal, the Police have acquired a 10 year imprisonment without fine given to a 43-year-old Ronny Mokgwatsana for rape. The second accused Vernon Mohlala aged 33 was sentenced to five years imprisonment which was suspended for five years. The two accused were further declared unfit to possess a firearms.
The accused were sentenced by the Groblersdal Regional Court after an incident where they took turns on gang raping a 27-year-old woman on 2012-06-17 at Tafelkop, Ga-Matsepe section outside Groblersdal.
The victim was on her way to visit her boyfriend when she came across the two unknown males who grabbed and threatened her with firearms and both raped her in the nearby bushes.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Jim Ledwaba welcomed these sentences on both hands. He has also assured members of the community in this Province a safe and secured environment at all times but they should continue to provide necessary support to the Police in terms of the supply of quality and reliable information about the criminal activities in and around their places unconditionally.
